About the GPA Calculator

Your Grade Point Average is one of the most consequential numbers in academic life โ€” it affects college admissions, scholarship eligibility, graduate school acceptance, academic probation status, and even some job applications. Yet many students aren't sure exactly how it's calculated.

Our GPA Calculator takes the mystery out of GPA computation. Enter your courses, letter grades, and credit hours, and get your semester GPA and cumulative GPA instantly. It works for the standard 4.0 scale used in the US, and also handles weighted grades (AP, IB, honors) and percentage-to-GPA conversion.

How It Works

Each letter grade is assigned a grade point value on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with + and โˆ’ adjustments). Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours to produce quality points. The sum of quality points is divided by the total credit hours to produce the GPA.

Formula / Key Reference

Quality Points = Grade Points ร— Credit Hours (per course)
GPA = Sum of all Quality Points รท Sum of all Credit Hours

Standard 4.0 Scale:

A+ = 4.0 | A = 4.0 | Aโˆ’ = 3.7
B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | Bโˆ’ = 2.7
C+ = 2.3 | C = 2.0 | Cโˆ’ = 1.7
D+ = 1.3 | D = 1.0 | Dโˆ’ = 0.7 | F = 0.0

Real-World Example

Semester courses:

English Literature โ€” A (4.0) โ€” 3 credit hours โ†’ 12.0 quality points

Calculus II โ€” B+ (3.3) โ€” 4 credit hours โ†’ 13.2 quality points

Chemistry โ€” B (3.0) โ€” 4 credit hours โ†’ 12.0 quality points

History โ€” Aโˆ’ (3.7) โ€” 3 credit hours โ†’ 11.1 quality points

PE โ€” A (4.0) โ€” 1 credit hour โ†’ 4.0 quality points

Total credit hours: 15

Total quality points: 12.0 + 13.2 + 12.0 + 11.1 + 4.0 = 52.3

Semester GPA = 52.3 รท 15 = 3.49

Note: The heavy 4-credit Calculus B+ (3.3) pulls the GPA below what a simple average of grades would suggest. This is why high-credit STEM courses have an outsized impact on GPA.

Common Uses

  • Calculating semester GPA before grades post to verify expected result
  • Planning which courses to retake to improve cumulative GPA
  • Checking if you meet the GPA requirement for a scholarship or honor society
  • Estimating what GPA you need this semester to reach a target cumulative GPA
  • Comparing grade scales between schools when transferring

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good GPA? โ–ผ
A 3.5 GPA (approximately Aโˆ’/B+ average) is generally considered strong and qualifies for most academic honors. A 3.0 is satisfactory. Below 2.0 triggers academic probation at most institutions. For graduate school and competitive employers, 3.5+ is a common screening threshold.
How are weighted GPAs calculated? โ–ผ
Weighted GPAs give bonus grade points for more challenging courses: AP or IB courses typically add 1.0 (so an A = 5.0 instead of 4.0), and honors courses add 0.5. The calculation method is the same โ€” multiply grade points by credit hours โ€” but the grade point values are higher for weighted courses.
Can I raise a bad GPA? โ–ผ
Yes, but it takes time. A GPA is a weighted average, so more credit hours create more inertia. If you have completed 60 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA, you need strong performance over many semesters to move it significantly. Use the calculator to model 'what-if' scenarios for future semesters.
